Spain's Joel Gonzalez thrashed South Korea's Lee Daehoon for Olympic gold in the final of the men's flyweight taikwondo tournament on Wednesday.
Gonzalez, a flyweight world champion, downed Lee 17-8 in a one-sided contest that saw the Korean beaten in every round.
Lee is a 2011 world champion in the bantamweight division.
"I've been through so much hard work to reach this gold, so much support, but also so much pain, but in the end it all paid off," said Gonzalez.
"I'm so glad and it's so great to be the first one," he said of his achievement in becoming his country's first taikwondo Olympic champion.
Lee said he had no regrets.
"I don't regret what I've done but I just lost to a great player such as Gonzalez"
Bronze medals in the tournament's two repechage bouts went to Oscar Munoz Oveido of Colombia and Russia's Alexei Denisenko.
