Noted Soviet and Russian theater director Pyotr Fomenko died on August 9 at age 80.
Fomenko, known primarily for his work in theater but who also directed a handful of films, staged more than 60 plays in cities throughout Russia and Europe.
He was named People’s Artist of the Russian Federation in 1993.
President Vladimir Putin offered his condolences on Thursday, saying Fomenko’s death was a tragic loss for culture.
