The death toll in earthquakes in northwestern Iran has risen to 180, the Fars news agency cited officials as saying.

Two powerful earthquakes hit parts of the East Azerbaijan province on Saturday.

Over 1,350 people were injured, according to Khalil Sa'ee, director-general of the Crisis Management Headquarters of the East Azerbaijan province.

Earlier it was reported that 153 were killed.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Ahar in East Azerbaijan at 1600 local time (1130 GMT). About an hour later, another quake, magnitude 6 on the Richter scale, hit Varzaqan.

Local officials were quoted by Fars as saying that four villages around Ahar have been destroyed completely and 60 others, half or more.

Iran is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating, as it sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust. The deadliest quake in the country was in June 1990. The 7.7-magnitude disaster killed some 37,000 people and left over 100,000 injured in the country’s northwest then.
