Anthony Joshua of Britain won a thrilling super heavyweight final against defending champion Roberto Cammarelle of Italy to take Olympic gold on Sunday.

Joshua was awarded the win on countback after recovering a three-point deficit going into the last round for an 18-18 final score.

The 22-year-old world silver medalist threw caution to the wind in round three, cornering his experienced opponent and landing a series of telling left-handers.

"That medal represents my journey. And the support from the team. It's much more than a gold medal, it's a life experience," Joshua said.

It takes Britain's boxing gold haul to three after Nicola Adams became the sport's first female Olympic gold medalist and Luke Campbell won the bantamweight title.

Cammarelle's silver means the Italian now has Olympic medals in all three colors after winning gold in 2008 and bronze in 2004.

"I feel I've lost even though I got a silver medal to go along with the gold in Beijing and the bronze in Athens," he said, adding that he did not accept the judges' verdict.

"I feel it was an unfair score because I was winning."

The bout was the last boxing match of the London Olympics.
