A bomb ripped through a shop in the city of Nazran in Russia’s troubled North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia in the early hours on Wednesday, a local police spokesman said.

The bomb went off at around 1.20 a.m. local time [22:20 GMT Tuesday] at a shop located at a busy crossroads in Nazran, the former capital of Ingushetia. No one was hurt in the explosion.

Police arrived at the scene as the suspected attackers were fleeing in a car.

A brief pursuit ended without results because the engine of the police vehicle failed, the police spokesman said.

One police officer was slightly injured in a shootout, an Interior Ministry source said.

The shop building was significantly damaged by the explosion, which was equivalent to about 5 kilograms of TNT.
