Moscow said on Friday the Geneva agreements on Syria “should not be buried alive.”

Moscow said on Friday the Geneva agreements on Syria “should not be buried alive.”

“I believe that the statements we are hearing from Washington and some other capitals, to the effect that the Geneva communique is dead, are rather irresponsible,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with Sky News Arabia to be aired in full on Saturday.

“This is the most important consensus, which has been reached with the participation of Western states, Russia, China, Turkey and leading Arab countries.”

A Russian-sponsored initiative for a meeting of the Action Group on Syria at the United Nations headquarters in New York has been suspended indefinitely, the Russian delegation at the UN's New York headquarters told RIA Novosti earlier on Friday.

The delegation said the meeting should be devoted to the agreements reached at the June 30 ministerial meeting in Geneva.

The Action Group includes representatives of five permanent member nations of the UN Security Council and some neighboring nations of Syria. The first meeting of the group's foreign ministers in Geneva agreed on the need to form a transitional government in Syria with the participation of all sides in the ongoing conflict there.
