Fifteen Afghan field commanders sentenced to death escaped from the central Kabul high security prison, the press secretary of the Taliban movement, Zabiulla Modjahed, said on Tuesday.

According to Modjahed, the escape occurred on Monday night at the Pul-e-Charkhi Prison, the largest in Afghanistan located to the east of Kabul.

"The escapees have already returned to their groups and have joined their families," Modjahed said on the Voice of Jihad internet portal.

Afghanistan's Pajhwok independent news agency cited a source in the central prison as saying that a large group of death row prisoners "vanished" from the third cell of the sixth block of the penitentiary.

The Afghan government has made no official comments on the escape.

Escapes from high security prisons in Afghanistan are common. Last year a group of some 500 Taliban inmates escaped from Kandahar's central prison through a 320-meter-long tunnel. Several Afghan police allegedly aided the escapees.
