Katusha’s Joaquim Rodriguez won the sixth stage of the Vuelta a Espana in the Spanish mountains on Thursday to extend his lead in the general classification.

The red jersey-wearing Spanish rider is now 10 seconds ahead of second-placed British rider Chris Froome.

Rodriguez, 33, beat Team Sky’s Froome by five seconds in the final sprint in the city of Jaca, while Spanish rider Alejandro Valverde of Movistar was third on the stage, 10 seconds behind Rodriguez.

On Friday, the peloton will tackle 164-kilometer flat ride to Alcaniz.

The Vuelta consists of 21 stages and finishes September 9 in Madrid.
