Natalia Gart has been elected president of the Russian Luge Federation, the federation said Saturday.
Natalia Gart is the widow of the previous president of the Russian Luge Federation, Leonid Gart, who died in an accident in Croatia in June.
“I am grateful for the Federation’s support,” Natalia Gart said.
“Today, when Russian lugers again occupy the top steps of podiums in international competitions, when a solid foundation for the further development of our sport has been laid, we will do our best to develop the sport further.”
Last season was Russia's best for 25 years at the European and world championships.
At the world championships, Albert Demchenko and Tatiana Ivanova claimed silver in the singles events and the Russian team finished second in the mixed relay.
At the European championships, Ivanova won gold in the women's singles and the Russian team finished first in the mixed relay.
Demchenko won Russia’s only Olympic luge medal to date with silver in Turin in 2006.
