Two weeks after winning 800 meters gold at the London Olympics, Russian runner Maria Savinova continued her run of success in Britain with victory in the same event at the Birmingham Diamond League meeting Sunday.
Savinova won in a time of 2 minutes 0.4 seconds, more than four seconds slower than her time in the Olympic final, the fastest women’s 800 meters run this year.
Pamela Jelimo of Kenya, the 2008 Olympic champion, was second in a time of 2.01.43, with Britain’s Marilyn Okoro third, a further 0.53 seconds back.
Russia also put in a strong showing in the high jump, although Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov was unable to repeat his performance from London.
British jumper Robbie Grabarz won with a leap of 2 meters 32 centimeters, with Ukhov second on 2.28 and another Russian, Andrei Silnov, third with the same result.
