A senior Agriculture Ministry official has been detained on suspicion of a 45 million ruble ($1.4 million) fraud, police said.
Sergei Bondarenko, head of the ministry's land policy department, is suspected of extorting the money from a company director, police said in a press release.
Bondarenko had earlier threatened to force the director from his job.
No charges have yet been brought against him.
