Prosecutors have dropped match-fixing charges against Italy defender Domenico Criscito, Italian media reported Tuesday.
Criscito, 25, was left out of Italy’s Euro 2012 squad after police visited the team’s training base just days before the tournament started, serving notice that he had been implicated in the so-called Calcioscommesse betting scandal.
He has repeatedly protested his innocence.
The claims against Criscito, now at Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg, stem from his time at Serie A side Genoa, when he played alongside defender Giuseppe Sculli, the grandson of a notorious mafia boss, who is also implicated in the investigation.
Charges against three other players who had been suspected, along with Criscito, of a role in fixing a Serie A match between Genoa and Sampdoria in 2010, have also reportedly been dropped.
The three other players are Rodrigo Palacio, Marco Dainelli and Omar Milanetto.
