The Art Moscow 16th Contemporary Art Fair has opened in the Central House of Artists. The traditional look this year has changed somewhat, both inside and outside: a number of participants have been lost as a result of the concurrently running Viennafair, but on the plus side a substantial discussion and education section has been added, the overall area has increased significantly as a result of changing the usual closed structure and the biennial Moscow Art Week is making its first appearance.
This year 35 galleries from all around the world are taking part in the fair, including Moscow galleries: Triumph, Fine Art, Iragui, Frolov and others.
Cuban artists will be represented by the Havana galleries La Acacia Gallery and Collage Habana Gallery, who are taking part in the fair for the first time this year. Regular participants again taking part this year include the Zvono Gallery from Belgrade, the Knoll Gallery (Vienna-Budapest) and the Tokyo-based Whitestone Gallery.
This year the area for the galleries has been significantly expanded and the closed structure has been altered. The external appearance of the art fair has changed: the space has been opened up with a small number of partitions and pictures hanging from museum fittings.
As well as exhibitions, this year’s art fair includes an extensive educational program. The Central House of Artists will be hosting roundtables, discussion panels, non-commercial projects and live performances.
The current art fair program aims to give global coverage to topical issues in the art market, the impact of contemporary art on the urban environment and the problems faced by art management, and other issues.
Several Moscow art galleries are not taking part in this year’s Art Moscow festival because the Viennafair art fair in Vienna is being held at the same time. Russian businessmen bought Viennafair six months ago because they decided they wanted to concentrate on contemporary art.
On the positive side, this year’s Art Moscow art fair is being held as part of Moscow Art Week, a biennial festival of contemporary art, in which the majority of contemporary art museums and private galleries are taking part.
