Southwest Colombia was hit by a magnitude 7.4 earthquake at 11:31 a.m. local time on Sunday, the US Geological Service reported.
The quake epicenter was located 12 miles (20 km) from the town of La Vega at 85 miles (140 km) depth.
There is no information so far about damage or casualties.
An earthquake of magnitude higher than six is considered strong and can cause serious damage and casualties among those nearby, according to geologists.
