A racing driver is to teach Terek Grozny and Belgium midfielder Jonathan Legear how to drive safely after the player crashed his car into a gas station while over the drink-drive limit, Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reported Wednesday.
A 21-year-old man suffered minor injuries when Legear’s Porsche hurtled into the gas station shop while he was returning from a night out, reportedly causing damage valued at €300,000.
Legear has admitted to being over the limit and had his license revoked by the Belgian authorities.
Another drink-driving incident in 2009 saw Legear drive his BMW into a house, earning the player 50 hours of community service, which Het Nieuwsblad reported he did not complete.
Now Legear is to spend four days working with seriously injured road crash victims and will enlist the services of former sports car and rally driver Marc Duez to teach him to drive.
“I have made a serious mistake. I really must change my behavior,” Legear said. “My image is at its absolute lowest point.”
The player said he had vowed to his family and girlfriend Lorraine never to drink-drive again.
He also repeated a promise to call the man injured in the crash to offer an apology.
“He must learn to drive defensively,” Duez said.
Terek has not commented on the latest incident.
Legear joined Chechnya-based Terek in August 2011 and has since played 13 league games for the club.
He was in Belgium at the weekend after being left out of the Terek squad for Friday’s 2-1 win at home to FC Rostov and said he would return to Russia on Wednesday.
