It’s now happened at each of the three US presidential debates in 2012, a comment either made by or directed at Republican challenger Mitt Romney has lit up social media and blog sites overnight with jokes and memes.
First it was Big Bird, then “binders full of women.” Now, it’s “horses and bayonets.”
At Monday night’s final debate, President Barack Obama responded to Romney’s criticism of his administration’s military spending.
“You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916,” Obama, speaking to Romney, said. “Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military’s changed.”
Obama added, “We have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.”
A website emerged Tuesday called calvarymenforromney.com, which shows a medieval horseman carrying a Romney campaign flag.
The site is one of many takes on the debate. Here are 12 tweets and memes that make light of the Obama-Romney faceoff, including some from celebrities.
