Ex-Toronto Raptors forward Sonny Weems scored 17 points as his CSKA Moscow team beat Germany's Brose Baskets 76-67 in the Euroleague regular season in the Russian capital.
CSKA came back from two points down at the end of the third quarter to outscore Brose 25-14 in the fourth.
The Russians remain unbeaten after three games, while Brose has lost all three of its games so far.
"We've achieved an important win against a very good team that makes any opponent work hard," CSKA coach Ettore Messina said, adding that his team could have let the win slip when Weems and Vladimir Micov fouled out in the third quarter.
"These two players spice up our game. We were able to send them both out in the fourth quarter, which immediately created chances in attack."
Brose coach Chris Fleming said his team had led the match slip away in the dying minutes.
"At the end, the CSKA players scored a lot of important baskets, especially Weems. We couldn't score anything," he said.
Brose's Slovenian forward Bostjan Nachbar top-scored with 21 points and five rebounds but the German team's lack of strength in depth was evident as only one other player, Sergerio Gipson, scored in double figures.
Another player to make a big contribution for CSKA, which lacked injured new signing Zoran Erceg, was center Viktor Khryapa, the Russian national team player providing 13 points and 10 rebounds.
