Novak Djokovic will end the year as world No. 1 for the second-consecutive season after top-ranked Roger Federer pulled out of the Paris Masters, the ATP has said.

To remain at the summit, the Swiss star had to defend points he earned by winning last year's tournament.

But after losing to Juan Martin del Potro at the Swiss Indoors on Sunday, Federer announced he would skip it, and thereby surrender the No. 1 spot.

Djokovic, who is competing at the Paris Masters, will be presented with the ATP No. 1 trophy next week during the World Tour Finals in London, the body said on its website.

Djokovic, 25, first clinched the No. 1 ranking in July 2011 after beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals of Wimbledon, the tournament he proceeded to win for the first time by beating Rafael Nadal in the final.

Highlights this year include the Australian Open title, reaching the French Open final, where he lost to Nadal, and the U.S. Open final, won by Andy Murray. Djokovic lost to Federer in the Wimbledon semifinals.
