CAIRO, November 5 (RIA Novosti) - Western countries are seeking a UN Security Council resolution on Syria to aggravate the situation in this country and form conditions for changing the ruling regime, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
The top Russian diplomat, who met on Sunday with UN and Arab League special envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, said there is no need for any resolution on Syria in order to implement earlier reached agreements in Geneva.
“If the priority is the change of the regime, then there will be more blood, but if the priority is to save lives, then there is no need for any type of resolutions. We have not yet tried to implement Geneva accords,” Lavrov said.
At a meeting on Syria in Geneva on June 30, foreign ministers from UN Security Council permanent member states and from Syria’s neighbors proposed establishing a transitional Syrian government that would comprise both the Syrian authorities and opposition forces, but incessant fighting in Syria has made it impossible to launch a dialogue so far.
The Syrian conflict has claimed more than 20,000 lives according to estimates by various sources. The West is pushing for President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster while Russia and China are trying to prevent outside interference in Syria, saying that the Assad regime and the opposition are both to blame for the bloodshed.
