ST. PETERSBURG, November 16 (R-Sport) – American mixed martial arts fighter Jeff Monson beat Alexander Emelianenko with his signature submission hold in the second round of the M1 Challenge in St. Petersburg.

Thursday's victory was revenge for "the Snowman" on the Emelianenko family after a points defeat to Alexander's elder brother Fedor in Moscow a year ago.

“They are different fighters,” said Monson. “I had a good plan for the fight against Fedor, and a good plan against Alexander. Unfortunately, I failed to bring that plan to life against Fedor.”

Monson made good on his pre-fight pledge to take it to the canvas as often as possible, and ultimately sealed victory with his favorite north-south choke hold.

Monson, 41, improved his record to 47 wins, 13 defeats and one draw.

The 31-year-old Emelianenko junior goes to 21 wins and six defeats.

Monson chose to emerge to the song of the Russian band Lube, after surprising everybody in June when he used the Soviet national anthem before his submission win over Denis Komkin.

“I have Russian friends in Florida who suggested that I used this song,” said Monson, who holds communist beliefs.

“This is a song about soldiers who return from the war in Afghanistan, the song that says that the war is a bad thing. This is what I believe in.”
