MOSCOW, December 1 (RIA Novosti) - Two gunmen died on Saturday in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan following a shootout with special forces soldiers, the National Anti-terror Committee (NAK) said.

The two blockaded themselves in a house in the village of Semender Kirovsky, and then tried to escape through the heating system, but were later killed in an exchange of fire.

The men, named as Omargaji Ibragimov and Kuldu Kulduyev, were wanted on a range of charges including money-laundering, the NAK said.

"They were involved in extorting large sums of money from businessmen and kidnapping, as well as attacks on law enforcement and special services personnel," the NAK said.

Armed clashes between law enforcement and armed Islamist groups occur often in Russia's North Caucasus republics, which have suffered an ongoing low-level insurgency over the last two decades.
