JALALABAD, December 2 (RIA Novosti) - Five airport security guards and five Taliban militants were killed after the gunmen attacked the US airbase in Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan early on Sunday, Pajhwok news agency reported.

The attackers detonated two explosives-packed vehicles outside the airport entrance at approximately 6 a.m. while several others tried to break into the heavily-guarded base.

A security official said five fighters wearing Afghan National Army uniforms were killed in the attack. The attackers used a nearby market and madrassah to fire rocket-propelled grenades and mortars on the airport.

A spokesman for the Nato-led forces confirmed the attack on the airbase but gave no details on any casualties.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, saying foreign troops sustained heavy casualties during the assault.

NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is scheduled to pull out the majority of its 130,000 forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and hand over responsibility for security in Afghanistan to the Afghan leadership by that time, with only training troops remaining in the war-torn country.
