The largest bell has been reinstalled in the bell-tower of the iconic St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg

The bell, which was reinstalled at St. Isaac’s today, is the heaviest of the ten bells that will eventually be installed. The bell’s clapper alone weighs over 300 kilograms. It is made from “bell bronze,” a copper-and-tin alloy

This bell, which reportedly has the lowest timbre, called the Polyelaios, will only be used on the most important religious holidays

It is the first and only bell that has been reinstalled so far at St. Isaac’s

The entire bell-tower was demolished in the 1930s, when the Anti-religious Museum was opened at the cathedral. The Polyelaios Bell weighing ten metric tons was cast at a Voronezh plant to designs by architect Auguste de Montferrand. The remaining nine bells, which are still stored at the Voronezh plant, will be installed in 2013
