NEW DELHI, December 29 (RIA Novosti) - Hundreds of people gathered at the India Gate monument in central New Delhi on Saturday in solidarity with relatives of a female rape victim, who died at a Singapore hospital on Friday.
The 23-year-old student of the Jawaharlal Nehru University was beaten and raped by six drunken men on a bus in New Delhi over two weeks ago. The woman was in critical condition and passed away on Friday at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
Those who gathered on Saturday at the Gate of India said they were saddened and angered at the same time and called on the authorities to take action to provide safety for people in India.
“We want the authorities to hear us. We want justice. We want safety,” a student, who came to the Gate of India, said.
The assault triggered violent public protests in India last week. Over 140 people, including 78 policemen, were injured after law enforcers clashed with demonstrators using water cannons, batons and tear gas.
Following the news of the student’s death and the violent protests, Indian law enforcers heightened security in the nation’s capital dispatching additional police, particularly at the Gate of India monument and the surrounding area, and closed 10 metro stations.
