MOSCOW, January 3 (RIA Novosti) – Indian police have filed charges against five men accused of attacking a university student on a bus last month.
The 23-year-old woman was raped and beaten by six men on a bus in New Delhi, prompted a wave of protests across the country. She died of injuries on Saturday.
Five arrested suspects were charged with the raping and murder on Thursday, BBC reported. If convicted, the five could face the death penalty. Police have planned to ask for the death penalty in the case, according to the Independent.
The trial is set to start on Saturday with daily hearings. The sixth suspect in the case is a minor and was expected to be tried in a juvenile court.
The Indian government plans to establish a commission to look into rape cases and suggest measures to improve safety of women. A report has to be submitted to the government in three months.
