Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin (1878-1939) was a Russian painter, graphic artist and art critic. He was born in the Saratov Region into the family of a cobbler. Photo: “Self-Portrait” (1918).
In his youth, Petrov-Vodkin befriended two local icon-painters and was able to watch all stages of the icon-making process. Petrov-Vodkin remained interested in icon-painting even after he became a professional artist. Photo: “The Virgin of Compassion” (1915).
Petrov-Vodkin once again depicted the Mother of God during the difficult post-revolution years when he painted his “Petrograd Madonna” (“The Year 1918 in Petrograd.” 1920).
In 1912, Petrov-Vodkin completed “Bathing of a Red Horse,” one of his most famous masterpieces. This work is also influenced by Russian icon-painting traditions.
Petrov-Vodkin died in Leningrad on February 15, 1939 and was buried in the Literatorskiye Mostki (Literature Gangway) section of Volkovo Cemetery. Photo: “Motherhood” (1925).
