MOSCOW, January 15 (RIA Novosti) - Nine people were killed, 28 more injured and one person went missing due to a carbon monoxide poisoning at a gold mine in northeast China's Jilin Province, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday.

The agency said citing local authorities that the accident happened at 4:00 a.m. local time at a gold mine in the town of Huadian.

There was no information available on the number of miners working in the mine at the time of the accident and on the condition of the injured people.

The mining industry in China is one of the most dangerous in the world due to poor work safety standards and intensive work schedules. Hundreds of lives are lost annually in accidents at mines in the country.
