MOSCOW, January 25 (R-Sport) - Dynamo Krasnodar coach Yuri Marichev has been appointed Russian national women's volleyball head coach, the federation told R-Sport on Friday.
The position became vacant after previous incumbent Sergei Ovchinnikov was found hanged in a Croatian hotel room three weeks after his team lost to Brazil in the quarterfinals of the London Olympics.
Marichev was nominated on Thursday by an influential council of top coaches and approved at Friday’s federation board meeting. He will retain his role with Dynamo while running the national team.
Marichev, 60, led Russia men’s team to the gold at the world junior championships in 2005.
The Russian women's Olympic performance was widely seen as a failure back home for one of the medal favorites.
