MOSCOW, January 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian opposition movement activists delivered a petition to the Presidential Administration on Saturday, demanding the release of those accused in the so-called "Bolotnaya" case and an investigation into the circumstances around the death in Dutch custody of Russian activist Alexander Domatov, Left Front coordinator Sergei Udaltsov said on Saturday.
"People came to the Presidential Administration to give in a petition with a firm demand for the release of the Bolotnaya prisoners, and an objective investigation of the events on Bolotnaya Square on May 6. Our third demand is an investigation of the circumstances around the death of Dolmatov," he said.
Moscow's Bolotnaya Square was the scene of an anti-government demonstration last May, which turned violent. Over 400 people were arrested and scores injured when protesters briefly broke through police lines in a bid to take their protest to the Kremlin walls.
Alexander Dolmatov, an opposition activist whom the Russian authorities wanted to question in connection with the violence at the rally, committed suicide in a Rotterdam deportation center on January 17 after the Dutch authorities denied him political asylum. Dolmatov had been in the midst of appealing the decision, according to a statement posted last Tuesday by the Association of Russian Lawyers for Human Rights, citing a Dutch rights activist.
Meanwhile eight people were detained in Moscow on Saturday for attempting to hold an unsanctioned protest on the city's Chistoprudny Boulevard, local police said.
