Moscow’s streets were covered by a glassy layer of ice on Saturday, after freezing rain fell in an ice-storm overnight.

Workers have already begun clearing roads with chemicals in some areas.

The roads are mainly open to traffic, and are clear of ice, presenting only a wet asphalt surface.

While the temperature remains around freezing (zero centigrade), there has been little improvement in the situation on the streets. The entrances to subway stations, which were previously cleared of snow and are walked by huge numbers of pedestrians, are now like skating rinks.

Courtyards, where the ice mixed with previously melted snow, are easier to walk on, but even walking through them to get to public transport routes presents some difficulties.

The Moscow traffic police have called on drivers to take maximum care when driving on the icy roads.

Conditions for formation of an ice-storm in Moscow and Moscow Region are likely to last through the weekend, weather forecasters warn.
