MOSCOW, February 10 (RIA Novosti) – Five crew members were killed and three others injured after a lifeboat fell from a cruise ship in Spain's Canary Islands, local media reported on Sunday.
The accident occurred during a routine safety drill on the British Thomson cruise ship Majesty, which is currently docked on the island of La Palma, Canaries News website has reported.
The lifeboat fell approximately 20 meters from the ship into the sea, killing three Indonesians, a Filipino and a Ghanaian. Two Greek nationals and one Filipino were seriously injured.
“A mechanical fault is being reported as the possible cause of the accident,” the report said. The British Foreign Office has been informed of the accident. An investigation is ongoing.
More than 2,000 tourists were on board the ship, but none of them have been affected.
