MADRID, February 24 (RIA Novosti) - Tens of thousands of people marched across Spain on Saturday to protest austerity measures and corruption, media reported.
The largest protest march took place in the capital Madrid, El Mundo daily reported.
Demonstrators massed up on Plaza de Neptuno, near the Spanish parliament’s lower house, which had become the scene of another large-scale protest in September 2012 - an event which resulted in clashes with riot police.
Saturday's march, held under the banner of the “citizens’ tide,” coincided with the 32nd anniversary of a 1981 failed coup attempt by the armed forces.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s budget cuts and tax hikes aimed at reducing the deficit have been widely unpopular in Spain.
