MOSCOW, February 25 (R-Sport) - A spokesman for Russia’s top investigative agency said Monday it was looking into claims that security systems for the University Games in Kazan have not been installed as promised.
Surveillance gear from supplier ASK Plus was found to be absent when Kazan’s railway station underwent a pre-Games check, Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told RIA Novosti.
“During a comprehensive inspection of equipment at the train station in the city of Kazan, conducted in January 2013, it was established that the ASK Plus company did not fulfill its obligations under contracts for a total of more than 14 million rubles ($460,000),” he said.
ASK Plus signed contracts worth a total of 97 million rubles ($3.2 million) with state firm Russian Railways to supply surveillance equipment to Kazan in the run-up to the University Games, which will take place July 6 through 17 this year.
The local transport arm of the Investigative Committee is checking whether transport workers abused their authority in relation to the deals, Markin said. He did not specify whether proceedings were under way against ASK Plus.
The University Games, also known as the Universiade, will be the largest sports event to take place to date in Kazan and has required a large-scale upgrade of the central Russian city’s infrastructure.
