MOSCOW, March 10 (RIA Novosti) – Over 900 dead pigs have been retrieved from the Huangpu River, a drinking water source for residents of Shanghai, China’s most populous city, the local media reported on Sunday.
The pig carcasses were first spotted in the Songjiang section, the upstream of the Huangpu, according to the city's water supply bureau.
The bureau said water quality had not been affected. However, local environmental protection and water supplies authorities have said they have stepped up the disinfection process and quality examinations at water intakes.
The Shanghai Agriculture Committee has said it has carried out bio-safety treatment on the retrieved dead pigs and is currently investigating where the animals may have come from.
The committee also said it had not received any reports of animal epidemic outbreaks in Shanghai.
Earlier reports have said the dead pigs may have come from a farm in the river’s upper tributaries.
