MOSCOW, March 25 (RIA Novosti) - A fishing vessel carrying 95 people, who intended to find asylum in Australia, capsized some 14 nautical miles (26 km) to the northwest of Christmas Island, ABC website reported on Monday.
Two people were killed after the vessel capsized and 93 were rescued by an Australian border guard vessel, the Ocean Protector.
“At this stage… two of the asylum seekers have drowned, there are at least two other asylum seekers that are critically unwell,” ABC quoted Christmas Island Administrator Jon Stanhope as saying.
Stanhope said the Ocean Protector was tracking the suspicious fishing vessel full of people and was in the area, when the accident happened.
He did not specify the nationality of the people from the fishing vessel, saying that all those rescued have been already taken to hospitals on Christmas Island.
