MEXICO, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - A Twitter account of Acting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro gained over half a million followers only nine days after he launched it to communicate with his supporters ahead of the forthcoming presidential elections.
Maduro, who previously held the post of Venezuela’s vice-president and whom the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez handpicked as his successor shortly before his death, had no social media accounts and he opened one on Twitter on March 17.
Maduro earlier said that he would invite the 500,000th subscriber of his Twitter account for a personal meeting.
Henrique Capriles, Maduro’s chief contender in the presidential poll running from the country’s opposition, has over 2.2 million users of his Twitter microblog.
Chavez was an active user of his Twitter microblog, which he opened on April 27, 2010. The former president, who ruled Venezuela for 14 years, died on March 5 at the age of 58 after a two-year-long fight with cancer. Snap presidential elections in Venezuela have been scheduled for April 14.
