CAIRO, March 31 (RIA Novosti) - Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr said on Sunday he believes that Iran should participate in the search for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict in Syria.
“It is necessary to cooperate with Iran and for Tehran to take part in the accomplishment of a diplomatic solution to the Syrian conflict and the end of the bloodshed in this country to provide a democratic future for the Syrian people and the unity of Syria,” Amr said.
The Egyptian top diplomat met on Sunday with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is currently on a short visit to Cairo.
Amr said he believed that daily armed clashes in Syria would lead to a sharp deterioration of the situation in the whole region.
“This is why it is in the interests of all regional powers to put an end to the tragedy in Syria as soon as possible,” he said.
About 70,000 people have died in Syria since the start of the uprising against President Assad in March 2011, according to UN figures.
