MOSCOW, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - A troupe of 300 circus fleas from Bavaria apparently froze to death en route to a gig in an open-air museum in western Germany, the DPA news agency reported on Sunday.
The fleas were to perform at an Easter fair in the western town of Mechernich-Kommern.
The fleas “died in their transportation box,” the German agency quoted Flohzirkus Birk director Robert Birk as saying. He said the box had thermal insulation.
Museum director Michael Faber confirmed the information, saying that it was “no April fool's joke.”
He said that a local insect expert had provided 50 fleas to replace the deceased performers and Sunday's show was saved.
“I hope we'll get through this without any more fatalities,” Faber told Associated Press.
