YEREVAN, April 9 (RIA Novosti) – Armenian incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan was sworn in on Tuesday after being reelected as the country’s leader in February presidential elections.
Sargsyan’s inauguration ceremony was held in downtown Yerevan at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex, where he arrived escorted by police motorcyclists.
The 58-year-old president was reelected for a second term in the first round of the February 18 presidential election, in which he gained 58.64 percent of the vote.
US-born former Foreign Minister Raffi Hovhannisyan came in second, with 36.74 percent of the vote.
International observers said the Armenian election was generally well-administered, with fundamental freedoms respected, and that minor violations recorded did not influence the outcome of the election.
