VORONEZH, April 12 (RIA Novosti) – A woman transporting a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of heroin amid various Easter goods in her car has been detained in Central Russia’s Voronezh Region, the regional anti-drug authorities said on Friday.
The woman, whom drug police suspect of attempting to sell drugs in Voronezh and organize a drug trafficking channel via the city, had been under police surveillance for three months. She and her accomplice were detained while traveling from Moscow by car.
“Having bought a kilogram of heroin in Moscow, the woman apparently experienced an upsurge of religious sentiment, and took the opportunity to stock up on various goods to celebrate the resurrection of Christ,” the Voronezh drug police department said in a statement.
The driver was unaware of the nature of the passengers’ cargo and was extremely surprised to discover what it consisted of, police said.
A criminal case has been launched into the illegal acquisition, possession and transportation of drugs. The woman, whose name was not disclosed, faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty.
