ST. PETERSBURG, April 15 (RIA Novosti) - Police officers freed a female undergraduate student who was being held hostage by a man she spurned, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.
The young woman was captured at a university dormitory near St. Petersburg on Sunday morning and held by a man armed with an Uzi CO2 BB gun and a kitchen knife.
The girl’s friend called the police, who arrived at the scene and eventually talked the man into laying down his arms and turning himself in.
The hostage was not harmed.
A criminal case has been opened against the man who has a previous criminal record and is facing up to five years in prison if convicted.
