BEIJING, April 17 (RIA Novosti) - A probe ruled out an epidemic, including one caused by the H7N9 flu virus, as a possible reason why hundreds of animals suddenly died in central China, Xinhua reported on Wednesday.

A total of 410 pigs and 122 dogs were found dead on Monday morning in Dongtun, a village in the Henan Province. All animals died overnight.

“Initial investigation eliminated an animal epidemic and H7N9 bird flu,” the agency reported, citing the local authorities.

Residents initially linked the deaths to emissions from a local chemical plant, which they say gave off an "extremely strong odor" on Monday morning. Tests conducted by a local environmental watchdog showed the air and water pollution at normal levels. However, chemical factories in the area were still ordered to halt production and had their electricity supply cut off pending an investigation.

None of the local residents developed any abnormal symptoms thus far.

Tissue samples of the deceased animals have been sent for tests to the Henan University of Science and Technology.

The carcasses “have been disposed of safely and will pose no threat to humans,” Xinhua said.
