KIEV, April 17 (RIA Novosti) – A Ukrainian national was caught trying to smuggle 39 million rubles ($1.2 million) into Russia at a border crossing, Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service said on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian arrived in his car at the Goptovka border crossing in the Kharkov Region on Tuesday evening. The border guards had been tipped off in advance that the man could be trying to smuggle in a large sum of money.
“During inspection, a joint group [of the Border Guard Service and the Tax Ministry] discovered a hiding place in the car’s gas tank. It turned out it was packed full with Russian rubles,” the Border Guard Service said. “In all, there were 39 million Russian rubles in the tank.”
Large scale transfers of foreign currency abroad from Ukraine are only allowed with the permission of the National Bank of Ukraine, according to its rules.
