MOSCOW, May 1 (RIA Novosti) - At least six people were killed and 14 injured in floods and mudslides caused by heavy rains that hit China’s southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region this week, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the agency, the rains, which began on Monday, affected a total of over 420,000 people, displacing 17,200 out of them.
Some 12,000 hectares of farmland were flooded and a total of 270 houses were destroyed, while the preliminary estimate of the economic losses inflicted by the natural calamity puts the figure at $11 million.
The heavy rains follow a devastating 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Lushan County in southwest China’s Sichuan province on April 20, killing about 200 people and injuring over 13,000.
