The European Space Agency said the spacecraft had run out of the liquid helium needed to cool its cameras, and the observatory would be placed in a heliocentric “parking” orbit starting this May following a number of technical checks.
Named in honor of British astronomer William Herschel, the Herschel Space Observatory, which was launched on May 14, 2009, boasts the largest and most powerful infrared space telescope with a 3.5-meter mirror.
The observatory’s main objective was to study the origin and evolution of stars and galaxies, so scientists could understand the origin of the Universe and its development.
Scientists hope the telescope’s database will help make numerous discoveries.
