Estonia's authorities have refused to grant political asylum to an Afghan interpreter who used to work with the Estonian military in Afghanistan, local newspaper Postimees reported on Wednesday citing officials.

TALLINN, May 1 (RIA Novosti) – Estonia's authorities have refused to grant political asylum to an Afghan interpreter who used to work with the Estonian military in Afghanistan, local newspaper Postimees reported on Wednesday citing officials.

The unnamed interpreter earlier applied for asylum in Estonia citing fears that due to his cooperation with the military, he and his family would face danger after the withdrawal of NATO troops. But his application has been rejected.

“Different state agencies have carried out a thorough analysis and came to the decision to deny asylum to the former interpreter,” Inga Bowden, the government’s spokesperson, told the newspaper. She declined to elaborate on the case.

The Afghan government has said that it will be capable to protect the Afghan population after the withdrawal of foreign troops in 2014.
