MOSCOW, May 2 (R-Sport) - Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova failed to reach the Portugal Open semifinals Thursday, suffering a straight-set defeat to world No. 53 Romina Oprandi.
The Swiss player didn’t give her opponent a single break opportunity as she took a 6-2, 6-2 victory in just 63 minutes. As a former French Open champion, Kuznetsova has pedigree on the clay surface used in Portugal.
This was the first ever win over Kuznetsova for Oprandi, who lost all three of their previous clashes.
In the semifinal, Oprandi will play against another Russian after third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and seventh seed Elena Vesnina meet later Thursday for their quarterfinal.
The Portugal Open, formerly known as the Estoril Open, is a $235,000 tournament played in the city of Oeiras.
