Soon before May, the Altai Mountains become covered in purple and pink Rhododendron ledebouriie, which is often called Ledum. 03.05.2013, Sputnik International
In the last few years, tourism has grown in the Republic of Altai. Tourists come to the Altai Mountains from all across Russia and even abroad to admire the blooming of the Rhododendron ledebouriie.
Rhododendron ledebouriie is only in bloom for one and a half to two weeks. Tourist camp and nature reserve staff say the number of tourists increases every year.
The plant is not too discriminating; it will easily grow on a cliff side. Rhododendron blossoms can be seen in the Maiminsky and Chemalsky districts, but the Ongudaisky district boasts the greatest number.
For two weeks, the mountain slopes behind the Chike-Taman pass, the oldest pass on the Chuya Highway, are completely covered with the flower, which transforms the landscape.
The authorities believe that developing new kinds of tourism will attract more people to the Republic of Altai, which would in turn boost the region’s general development.
