MOSCOW, May 3 (RIA Novosti) - Henrique Capriles, the leader of Venezuela’s opposition, has formally contested the results of the recent presidential election, media reported.

Nicolas Maduro narrowly won the April 14 vote, but opposition coalition lawyers have filed a complaint to the Supreme Court, saying the polls’ results should be annulled due to a number of irregularities, the BBC reported Thursday.

Maduro, who was sworn in on April 19 to replace the late Hugo Chavez, said the elections were fair.

Chavez, who had ruled Venezuela for 14 years, died on March 5 at the age of 58 after a two-year-long fight with cancer. He named Maduro as his successor before undergoing the latest surgery in December 2012.

Maduro, 50, gained over 50 percent of the vote in the presidential election, while his rival Capriles, 40, received some 49 percent.

Capriles alleged there were dozens of cases when people were coerced to vote for the government's candidate, the British broadcaster reported.
