MOSCOW, May 4 (RIA Novosti) - Two Azerbaijani nationals have been detained in Iran for illegal activities, the Islamic Republic’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
“These individuals traveled to our country as tourists,” an informed ministry source was quoted by Press TV as saying.
He did not elaborate on the charges, only adding that an investigation is underway.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry recently summoned Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Tehran to lodge a protest against a forum of the separatist anti-Iran South Azerbaijan National Liberation Movement that was held in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on March 30, Press TV reported.
Last May, Iran arrested two Azeri nationals, identified as Shahryar Hajizadeh and Farid Husseinov, on charges of espionage-related activities, specifically recruiting dissidents in Iran to promote separatism, the agency said.
